About the artwork
Boudin was one of the first French painters to work entirely en plein air, and he mentored a young Claude Monet, pointing him towards outdoor painting and the study of light. In the 1860s Trouville was turning into a fashionable seaside resort for wealthy Parisians, and instead of maritime labour Boudin painted the new leisure class at the shore. The original oil on wood lives in the permanent collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
